Old Faithful Geyser, Yellowstone Country’s natural wonder
Old Faithful Geyser is nestled in The Upper Geyser Basin, home to the largest concentration of geysers in the world. Even though Old Faithful is not the largest or most grand geyser, it is the most popular attraction of Yellowstone National Park. The geyser was given its name by members of the Washburn Expedition in 1870 based on its punctuality and predictability. Throughout the course of the years, the average interval between Old Faithful eruption
intervals have lengthened due to earthquakes. Nonetheless, Old Faithful is still as spectacular and predictable as it was upon its discovery.
Old Faithful Quick Facts
• Old Faithful erupts every 63 to 75 minutes
• Eruptions of boiling water can reach heights of 184ft and 204°F
• Old Faithful eruptions can last from 1 to 5 minutes
• Old Faithful is one of over 300 geyser in Yellowstone National Park.
An Old Faithful eruption begins with boiling water that circulates underground. Since there is little place for steam to escape, pressure builds up. The confined steam and water burst through a narrow opening, lasting until the water reservoir is exhausted or the pressure drops.
Watch Old Faithful in action
The boardwalks that surround Old Faithful Geyser give you access to truly experience this natural wonder. Visit the Old Faithful Inn or National Park Visitor Center and locate the posted times for the next predicted eruption. Old Faithful Inn’s second-floor veranda also provides another view point to witness an Old Faithful eruption. A word of caution; remain on the boardwalks and walkways to avoid boiling temperatures
