National Geographic writer Mark Jenkins presents: “Tea, Trade and Tyranny: Tibet and China over Time”

Tibet and China have had a complex relationship for 1500 years. Wars have been fought, treaties signed, then ignored in the next conquest. But there was always trade. In this presentation, National Geographic writer Mark Jenkins takes us on a journey down the forgotten Tea Horse Road. For almost 1000 years there was a stone-paved road that connected Ya’an, the tea-growing capital of Sichuan province, with Lhasa, the 12,000-foot high capital of Tibet. Tea was essential to daily life in Tibet, and China’s feudal kingdoms needed war horses. For centuries China and Tibet were on equal footing, but the ascendancy of China in the second half of the 20th century has devastated Tibet and Tibetan culture. With National Geographic images, Jenkins reveals the modern lives of the Tibetans, and the Chinese, and the geopolitics that have always connected them. This event is free and open to the public.

Park County Arts Council presents: “Carlos Nunez and Band”

From northern Spain’s Celtic coast, Carlos Núñez connects the musical tradition of his native Galicia with that of Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, and beyond. When the Los Angeles Times suggested that “if it’s possible to become a pop star playing traditional music on bagpipes and recorder, Núñez could be the man,” it may have been an understatement. Few pop stars pack the energy, virtuosity, imagination, daring, and charisma into their concerts and recordings as Galician multi-instrumentalist Carlos Núñez does. He is the world’s most famous player of the gaita, the bagpipes of Galicia, Spain’s northwest, Atlantic Ocean-abutting region rich in vibrant, uniquely expressive Celtic traditional music.

Annual Celebration of the Black-Footed Ferret

The Meeteetse Museums will  host a celebration of the anniversary of the rediscovery of the black-footed ferret. A number of free events are planned in honor of the date when John and Lucille Hogg’s dog, “Shep,” found a black-footed ferret in 1981. This species of ferret was believed to be extinct and its discovery set off a series of events that have, over the years, resulted in the ongoing recovery of the species. Instrumental in the recovery was a successful captive breeding program led by the US Fish and Wildlife and a number of other entities. Free admission.
