The hardy families that ventured to the Rocky Mountains required survival skills that are seldom used today. In order to handle and manage livestock, settlers needed to know how to ride, rope, and tame wild stock. These skills are still used on working ranches in the west and can be seen at various rodeo events in Buffalo Bill's Cody / Yellowstone Country.
