I know what you’re thinking.
You’re incredibly disappointed because you missed the Meeteetse ice fishing derby last weekend because it was too close to Valentine’s Day, and your boyfriend (girlfriend/wife/husband) had big multi-day plans involving a treasure hunt.
Even if you are a huge fan of both Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men and you really do believe that Ann Margaret and Sophia Loren would both turn up in northern Minnesota in the middle of winter, there was no way you were going throw a monkey wrench in your partner’s romantic plans.
Well, I have some good news for you. Because the weather has been too nice and sunny, the organizers had to cancel the seventh annual Presidents Day Ice Fishing Derby.
Many of us were eagerly awaiting the event, but it was called off because of warm temperatures that made it a bad idea to try and ice fish.
Fortunately, my friend Tess from the Meeteetse Visitor Center called me the other day with some great news. The community plans to instead hold an open water fishing derby May 2-3 on the Upper Sunshine and Lower Sunshine reservoirs. The derby will feature teams of up to three people who can enter six fish they catch that will be judged by combining their length and width. The fish’s, not the teams’ width and length, that is.
This is one of the things I just love about our area and its small towns. As disappointed as we all were, we did not put a sad my-dog-ran-off-with-my-best-friend-and-I-sure-do-miss-him song on the stereo and feel sorry for ourselves. No, we came up with an alternative. Some people are already talking about making this an annual event.
You should come to Meeteetse for this event. And while you’re there, check out the “Garage-O-Rama” town-wide yard sale the same weekend. Everybody will gather afterwards for a fish fry as well. It will be even more fun than that treasure hunt!
Until next week, I am lovin’ (small town) life in Cody, Wyo.
